Andersen Sterilizers News  | OCTOBER 5, 2021

Andersen Sterilizers is pleased to announce, its President and CEO, A.E. “Ted” May, has been appointed to a three-year term as Co-Chair of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Hospital Ethylene Oxide (EO) Sterilizer Working Group. May’s term begins September 2021.

The Andersen companies have a long-standing commitment to the regulatory standards process. More than 30 years ago, Andersen co-founder, Dr. Shirley Andersen, was a founding member of the original AAMI ethylene oxide working group (WG1). Andersen has had representatives on leading AAMI committees ever since.

With 18 years’ experience on a half-dozen AAMI committees, May is one of three Andersen employees serving on committees within the organization dedicated to advancing the development, and safe and effective use of medical technology.

“I’ve been a member of AAMI for nearly 20 years,” said Ted May. “Serving on various sterilization committees has allowed me to work with some of the leading researchers and regulators in the field. During this time, I’ve learned a great deal from many industry professionals who have been very generous with their expertise and time. This co-chair position gives me the opportunity to make some small contributions to the system that has provided me with so much over the years.”

AAMI is a nonprofit organization with a diverse community of more than 9,000 professionals united by the mission of the development, management and use of safe and effective health technology. AAMI is the primary source of consensus standards, both national and international, for the medical device industry, as well as practical information, support, and guidance for healthcare technology and sterilization professionals.

The Hospital EO Sterilizer Working Group, or AAMI Working Group 63 (WG63), is responsible for the standard ST24; Automatic, “General Purpose Ethylene Oxide Sterilizers And Ethylene Oxide Sterilant Sources Intended For Use In Health Care Facilities.” This standard applies to automatic, general-purpose EO sterilizers and EO sterilant sources that are intended for use in hospitals and other health care facilities.

It has been several years since ST24 underwent a thorough revision. One of the challenges facing the working group is to update the standard to reflect current hospital practices and changes in available ethylene oxide technology.
